Swansea Council say work is due to start this week on resurfacing the busy Junction 47 of the M4, adding to 19 community resurfacing schemes the council’s highway maintenance teams completed last year – not including thousands of potholes that were also filled.

On top of resurfacing schemes at Pentrepoeth Road, Morriston, and Gorwydd Road, Gowerton and the M4 at Penllergaer, the council says plans are in place for upgrades shortly at Ysgubor Fach Road in Waun Wen and St Peter’s Road, Newton.

Andrew Stevens, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: “The post-New Year period is a busy time of year for our pothole teams in particular due to the way the wet and freezing temperatures can break-up roads and cause potholes.

“Even so, the vast majority of potholes reported to us by the public are sorted within a couple of days and the teams will do all they can to get round as quickly as they can to do the fixes.

The council say that last year a total of 9km of resurfacing work was completed in Swansea including projects at Fendrod Way in Llansamlet, Swansea Road in Llewitha, Swansea Road in Garngoch and Cwm Level Road in Brynhyfrhyd.

The Council approved more than £3m of investment in early 2023 as part of its budget plans and bolstered the funding even more with an additional £2million investment approved in June.

Cllr Stevens, said: “We have invested significant amounts of funding this financial year to ensure our roads are properly maintained. Our highways maintenance teams have covered a lot of ground, working hard to target main roads most in need of repair.

“It’s important to understand we can’t repair everything that needs doing in one year. That’s why we have a five-year highway management programme in place which guides our crews to the roads scheduled for resurfacing over those five years.

“That’s not all we do when fixing roads. We also have in place a number of additional road repair initiatives that complement the major schemes. This includes a city-wide programme to tackle smaller road repairs in every ward across Swansea.”
