£270,000 lottery funding boost for Kidwelly tourism promotion
A new partnership agreement has seen hundred of thousands of pounds secured to promote tourism in Carmarthenshire’s Kidwelly and Mynydd-y-garreg.
Kidwelly Town Council has struck up a partnership with not-for-profit community organisation Kidwelly Community Hub CIC to secure £270,000 to implement a two-year strategy aimed at growing the visitor economy in the area.
Called the ‘Black Cat Tourism Strategy’, it aims to drive tourism by supporting and developing cultural and tourist events for Kidwelly and Mynyddygarreg.
The strategy will support local businesses to secure funding and develop business regeneration plans.
The funding has come from the Welsh Government’s Coastal Communities Fund, delivered by the National Lottery Community Fund.
The project runs from July 2021 to March 2023. Four posts will be created to support the community in delivering the strategy.
The Mayor of Kidwelly, Councillor Christopher Peters-Bond said: “At over 900 years old, Kidwelly is a historic town and is blessed with an outstanding natural environment – from the medieval castle to the panoramic views from the SSSI accredited Mynydd-y-garreg mountain.
“Tourism is important to the economy of the area, particularly with the rise in staycations as we emerge from the pandemic. The black cat tourism strategy is a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of Kidwelly and Mynydd-y-garreg as a desirable location for tourists.”
Crisial Davies, Director of Kidwelly Community Hub CIC said: “The community are thrilled to be given this opportunity by the Welsh Government’s Coastal Communities administered by the National Lottery and it’s a recognition that investment is needed in small coastal towns such as Kidwelly.”
