Defiant Ospreys battle through the South African storm for bonus point win

A dogged and lung-busting performance of grit and determination saw the Ospreys over the line 27-21 against South African province DHL Stormers in their crunch United Rugby Championship fixture this evening.

A brace of tries from winger Luke Morgan and one from hooker Sam Parry had put the away side in the ascendancy at the break 17-7 despite Stormers centre Dan du Plessis scoring midway through the half.

Stormers number eight Evan Roos crossed to once again reduce the home side’s arrears, but colossal all-action flanker Harri Deaves would plough his way through to earn the Ospreys an attacking bonus point and leave the hosts shell-shocked.

The Stormers would throw everything but the kitchen sink at the visitors who would stand tall with wave after wave denied by staunch defending.

With the clock ticking down, replacement fly-half Jack Walsh would kick an all-important penalty to confirm the result to the jubilation of the away bench who could only have dreamt of such a result prior to kick-off.

Stormers would steal a losing bonus point in added time through a penalty try to place a slight dampener to a perfect night for the Ospreys.

For now, however, the Welsh region and their coach won’t care as they rise to seventh in the URC table becoming the first side in the country to win away from home this campaign, ending the South African’s 100% home record and also becoming the first Ospreys side to win a league match in the Southern Hemisphere.

Ospreys captain and player of the match Morgan Morris:

“Everybody put in a shift. I don’t think many teams win here so to come and do that is an incredible achievement.

“The defensive effort is about that mindset about working for each other. Mark Jones (defence coach) has come in and given us a really good defensive boost.
