The community group has been recognised for its exceptional dedication to preserving Welsh heritage, implementing innovative educational approaches, and supporting community developments.
This esteemed honour, one of the highest accolades for volunteer groups in the UK in recognition for their long term commitment, is a true testament to the team’s dedication, perseverance and love for the historic landmark.
For years, the Friends of Oystermouth Castle have tirelessly worked to restore, maintain and bring to life one of Wales’s most cherished castles.
Through historical tours, educational partnership programmes and a range of community events, the team have not only safeguarded the castle’s legacy but have also made it accessible and engaging for visitors of all ages both locally and internationally.
This award recognizes their volunteer service as both impactful and invaluable to the community.

One of the specific categories identified in the Award was for the castle’s involvement in the innovative educational project ‘Cynefin’ spearheaded by a partnership with Swansea University, Gower College and Gower Unearthed.
The innovative partnership has helped over 375 pupils and students undertake an integrated approach to the Welsh Assembly Government curriculum initiative ‘Successful Futures’ involving communication, numeracy, IT, history, geography, photography over the last two years. This is in addition to the school tours which have taken place over many years.

The category relating to Heritage highlighted the work the castle undertakes with regard to enhancing the knowledge of Welsh history through books, pamphlets, guided tours, and presentations to outside organisations.
The varied events promoting Welsh life via the ‘Crusader’ team and their special events with organisations such as Gwerin y Gwyr Medieval Re-enactment, Gower Unearthed, Archaeology, Medieval Medicine, Metal Detector Finds, etc. have all helped attract locals and tourists to the area helping local businesses. Of particular success are the many costumed events held for children.
The Chair of the Friends of Oystermouth Castle, Paul Lewis, expressed pride and gratitude:
“Receiving the King’s Award for Voluntary Service is a marvellous recognition of our team’s dedication. It’s a tribute to every volunteer’s commitment, team effort, support, hard work and our shared passion for preserving Oystermouth Castle’s unique heritage for future generations.”
The award will be presented to the group by the King’s Award for Voluntary Services in an official ceremony in the new year.
