Huge mountain fire believed to be ‘deliberately set’

A huge wildfire on Mynydd Gelliwastad hillside is believed to have been "deliberately set" according to the fire service.

Three fire crews were called to tackle the massive blaze on Wednesday evening (24 April) near Clydach that could be seen from miles away.

A spokesperson for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 9.15pm on Wednesday, April 24th, the Abercrave, Morriston and Pontardawe crews were called to an incident on Mynydd Gelliwastad, Clydach.

“Crews responded to a wildfire which destroyed approximately four hectares of grass.  At the height of the incident, the fire front measured approximately 150 metres long.

“Crews utilised wildfire blower, beaters and knapsacks to extinguish the fire.  Crews continued to check for hot spots before leaving the scene at 11.29pm. 

“It is believed the fire was started deliberately.”
