The collision, which took place in the early hours of Thursday morning (29 February) saw a car colliding with traffic lights at the busy Pensarn roundabout on the A48 dual carriageway.
Dyfed Powys Police report that the male driver of the vehicle sadly died after being taken to hospital.
The A48 between Nantycaws and Pensarn was closed as a result of the collision.
Traffic was very busy in Carmarthen throughout the day as motorists were diverted away from the area, while police continued their investigations.
The road remained closed until around 1pm.
A spokesperson for Dyfed Powys Police said: “We are investigating a single vehicle road traffic collision which occurred at about 2.50am, this morning (Thursday, 29th February)
“A car has collided with the traffic lights on the A48 at Pensarn roundabout, Carmarthen.
“Sadly the male driver of the car has passed away in hospital.
“The A48 from Nantycaws to Carmarthen was closed with diversions in place and has since reopened.
“Thank you to all motorists who were affected by the road closure for their patience.”
