South Wales Police say the 24-year old man, who is understood to be a family member of the owner of the dog, was seriously injured in the incident.
The man was taken to hospital by ambulance following the incident on Blair Way in Aberavon around 7am this morning (Monday 17 June).
The dog was sedated by police and will be destroyed.
Inspector Jared Easton from South Wales Police said: “Due to excellent work by the officers involved, this incident was contained quickly, effectively and humanely, nullifying any risk to the wider public.
“The casualty’s family, who own the dog, have given their consent for the dog to be destroyed independently of police intervention.”
