The MP has been sitting as an Independent since October 2022 when she was suspended from the Labour party following bullying claims by members of her own staff.
Rees has confirmed that she will not be seeking re-election.
Constituency boundary changes mean that the Neath and Swansea East seats will be amalgamated in any future election. Rees was not eligible for selection for the new seat due to her suspension. That seat selection for the Labour party was won unopposed by current Swansea East MP, Carolyn Harris.
In a statement, Rees said: “Following the conclusion of the Labour party’s investigation into my conduct, I would like to make clear that I fully accept the outcome of the party’s process and offer an unreserved apology. I can also confirm that I have reviewed the findings of the investigation and taken a number of steps to ensure that my future conduct is of the highest standard.
“I am pleased that I have been able to resume my party membership and, following a conversation with the chief whip, have had the Labour whip restored today. I would like to take this opportunity to announce that I do not intend to seek re-election. I will, of course, continue to do everything to serve my constituents until the general election.”
Rees, originally from Kenfig Hill, has been an MP for Neath since 2015, serving as Shadow Secretary of State for Wales in the Shadow Cabinet of Jeremy Corbyn from 2017 to 2020. She was replaced by Llanelli MP, Dame Nia Griffiths when Kier Starmer became leader.
She was married to former Welsh Secretary, Ron Davies until they divorced in 1999.
