Ageing Penlan council estate set for transformation

Residents living in an ageing housing development in a Swansea community are being asked for their views on new plans to regenerate their estate.

Swansea Council has published early plans for the regeneration of the Heol Emrys and Tudno Place Estate in Penlan.

The aim is to regenerate the estate by modernising the current Council properties, building more new social rented homes and create a safer community for everyone living there.

The Council has worked closely with consultants – Powell Dobson Architects, to create the masterplan for the site and are now calling on residents to get involved and help shape the planned redevelopment.

Part of the scheme will include renovation of the interior and exterior of all the council properties, including new kitchens and bathrooms and landscaping of the area, and creating a new play area.

Much of the current design has been developed, taking into account comments made by the residents during an earlier consultation.

Andrea Lewis, Cabinet Member for Service Transformation, said: “We’re now in a position to present our latest plans for the estate to our tenants. I’m confident they will see it as a huge improvement to their community. They now have the opportunity to be involved in this upgrade to their homes and will be able to view the plans and ask question about the proposals.”

Additional proposals include adding more homes to the site to increase levels of council housing in the Penlan area and assist with reducing homelessness.

Cllr Lewis added: “The Council has already built new council homes in the city to increase our own housing stock, which in turn will help us reduce waiting lists for those seeking council accommodation.

“The latest plans for Heol Emrys and Tudno Place will involve increasing the number of properties in the community so we can provide modern and safe accommodation for families.”
