SWANS: Stewart set to miss four games as Cabango nears return

New signing Ross Stewart looks set to miss Swansea City’s next four matches with a quad injury.

The Scotland striker sat out Tuesday night’s win over Watford as well as last Saturday’s victory at Derby County.

“Ross had a soft tissue injury, not massive, but probably he can return in the international break,” head coach Vitor Matos said.

That would rule him out of Saturday’s home game with Wrexham, the trip to Southampton next Tuesday, and both the Burnley and Lincoln City fixtures before the break at the end of the month.

The visit to St Mary’s is the one he will be sorriest to miss. Stewart joined Swansea on a free transfer when his Southampton contract expired at the end of June.

His start in south Wales has been heavily disrupted. He missed the opening matches of the season while building fitness, having arrived without a pre-season, before this latest setback.

The 30-year-old has made just one substitute appearance, in the goalless draw with Sheffield United 11 days ago, since signing a three-year contract last month.

Cabango boost

There is better news on captain Ben Cabango, who came off with a heel problem against the Blades.

The Wales international sat out the Derby and Watford games, but Matos says he has a chance of returning to face Wrexham.

Such is Swansea’s form, however, that there is no guarantee Cabango walks straight back into the side.

Filip Lissah and Stephen Welsh have started the last two games together at centre-back, with Matos describing the academy product Lissah as “brilliant” after the win at Pride Park.

Swansea top the Championship having taken 10 points from their first four league games.

They also boast the best defensive record in the division, having conceded once all season, at Stoke City on the opening day.
