Black bag collection days could change for homes right across Carmarthenshire from Monday 2 November, including those not switching to the new recycling sacks.
Carmarthenshire Council is redrawing its collection rounds as its new Separated Recycling service starts. That is the day blue bags end for a third of homes, mainly in the west of the county.
The council says the change reaches homes across the county, including the two thirds keeping their blue bags for now.
Every home is being sent a letter this month confirming any change to its collection days, along with a new collections calendar. The council is asking residents to check it carefully, because it shows when their first black bag collection on the new schedule is due.
Some homes get a fourth black bag, just once
To help homes adjust, those whose first black bag collection on the new schedule falls in the week beginning 9 November or the week beginning 16 November can put out up to four bags, the council says.
From the week beginning 23 November, every home goes back to the standard limit of three black bags per collection.
Gap of more than three weeks? You get an extra collection
For a small number of homes, the new rounds leave a gap of more than three weeks between the last black bag collection on the old schedule and the first on the new one.
Those homes will get an additional black bag collection. The council says it will write to them, and they do not need to get in touch.
Three bags every three weeks, and what gets left behind
Carmarthenshire collects black bags every three weeks, up to three at a time.
The council’s new waste rulebook fixes the bag size at 60 litres, black only. Oversized or very heavy bags, and bags in any other colour, will be left behind.
A stickered bag is the first step on a ladder that runs from a letter to a warden’s visit, then to notices, fines or court.
‘Make a note of your new collection dates’
Cllr Edward Thomas, the council’s cabinet member for transport, waste and infrastructure services, said the council wanted to make the switch “as smooth as possible” for residents.
He said some homes would get extra help. “We are therefore introducing a temporary four-bag allowance for some homes whose black bag collection falls on the weeks commencing 9 and 16 November, and providing a one-off additional collection for some homes,” he said.
He asked everyone to check their letter. “We would encourage everyone to check the information sent to them and make a note of their new collection dates.”
Residents can sign up for free email or text reminders of their collections. They can also check their collection days on the council’s recycling pages.
The council is asking people to pass the information on to family, friends and neighbours who rely on others for updates like this.
