A 61-year-old man has been charged with murder over the death of Eleanor Barnfield in Bridgend.

Clifford Foster, of Bridgend, is due to appear at Newport Magistrates’ Court on Friday 23 October, South Wales Police said on Thursday.

Ms Barnfield, 47, from Bridgend, died in hospital after her car hit a wall on Coity Road on Monday 19 October. Officers found she had “puncture wounds unrelated to the collision”, the force said earlier this week.

The senior investigating officer, Claire Lamerton, said: “My thoughts remain with Eleanor’s loved ones at such a devastating time, and they continue to be supported by specialist officers.”

She added: “This is not being investigated as a domestic incident, and I encourage the public to not speculate about the circumstances as court proceedings are now active.”

What police have said since Monday’s Coity Road crash

Officers were called at around 12.43pm on Monday after a report that a car had hit a wall on Coity Road, which was closed at the junction with Highland Place for several hours.

A policing operation at Ger-y-Nant ran through Monday night and people were displaced from their homes, the force said. A 61-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday morning.

On Wednesday the force named Ms Barnfield, who worked for the housing association Valleys to Coast. Her family said she “was our rock”.

On Thursday the Welsh Ambulance Service rejected rumours on social media that it was slow to reach the scene. A rapid response car arrived seven minutes after the 999 call, it said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact South Wales Police through its website, quoting reference 2600342470.
