In a sumptuous free-flowing performance with ruthless execution to match, Wales international Liam Cullen scored a first-half double, whilst a Gonçalo Franco tap-in would all but seal victory by the break.
The visitors would show more fight and resistance after the break but it would be the Swans who would produce a professional display to gain a deserved victory.
It would be a welcome return to form in front of their home fans and for head-coach Luke Williams as the Swans move up one place to 10th in the Championship table ahead of three further games in 12 congested days of the festive period.
The Swans came into the game in 11th position in the table looking for some festive cheer after back-to-back defeats to Sunderland and Hull City last time had somewhat stalled a play-off assault in recent weeks.
Looking to get back to winning ways stood an in-form QPR side two points and three places behind Williams’ side.
Unbeaten in the last seven since the beginning of November, a date coinciding with the Swans last victory in SA1, Rangers under Marti Cifuentes have been a side very much on the rise. Having languished at the foot of the second tier having mustered just 10 points from their opening 15 games.
Knowing that improving on one win in seven at the Swansea.com will be needed to make an assault on the top six, Williams brought in Gonçalo Franco, Florian Bianchini, and Ronald back into his starting line-up. There would also be a place on the bench for Bishopston-born youngster Ben Lloyd in the matchday squad for the first time.
Having conceded just three in the last seven games, visitors QPR would be dealt a blow in the run-up to the match with captain Steve Cook ruled out of the next ten weeks through a foot injury. Head-coach Cifuentes bringing in Jake Clarke-Salter as one of two changes from the weekend victory over Preston.
It would be the home side who would start the brighter of the two trying to play at tempo, whilst their opposition looked to press on the ball.
After threatening a breakthrough minutes earlier through Brazilian Ronald’s deflected effort, the Swans early pressure would be rewarded with a goal in the 11th minute.
Wales striker Cullen showing clinical predatory instincts to peel off his marker to stroke home Ronald’s low right-wing cross for his seventh goal of the season passed helpless Rangers goalkeeper Paul Nardi.
Comfortable in possession and looking to pick spaces in the QPR backline, the Swans almost doubled their lead midway through the half. Ji-Sung Eom playing a one-two with Key drawing a low save from Nardi after neat build-up play before Bianchini would head over in the next phase of play.
It would be a warning to Rangers who would be slow to react to Williams’ side’s sharp movement but one they would not take. Cullen once again getting in the right place at the right time to score a carbon copy of his first this time from full back Key’s put-in to give the Swans a two-goal cushion.
Things went from bad to worse for the Hoops just after the half-hour mark as the Swans would continue their ruthless edge and go three to the good.
Eom turning full-back Jimmy Dunne inside out, before playing in Cullen. The forward’s shot from an acute angle would sting the palms of Nardi but would fall straight to Franco who would gleefully dispatches away his first for the club to the despair of the travelling support.
Despite making multiple changes at the break Rangers would not be able to break the momentum of the contest with the Swans looking the more likely to add to their lead in the early stages of the second period. Key skipping past a defender before belting a fizzing effort at Nardi, who would escape further damage to his goal.
That would change as the Swans would start to play deeper and encourage their opposition to venture forward. Lawrence Vigouroux, however, would be alert to scramble away substitute Illias Chair’s effort from an acute angle. A warning that the contest was not quite done and dusted.
The Swans would heed the warning, and despite an understandable drop off in tempo would control proceedings with substitute Vipotnik going close to a fourth but there would be no further action to the scoreboard with Williams’ side holding firm for a deserved three points.
