The 26‑year‑old has been a long‑term target for head coach Vítor Matos, who is keen to add a composed, ball‑playing defender to his back line ahead of pre‑season. Welsh is expected to sign a multi‑year deal, with negotiations described as positive and nearing completion.

Competition beaten to signature

Welsh had attracted interest from several Championship clubs, teams in Europe and Scotland, and at least one MLS side. Swansea are now in pole position, with the defender keen to secure regular first‑team football after limited opportunities at Celtic Park.

He had one year remaining on his contract but is believed to have agreed an early termination to facilitate the move. His registration is expected to be finalised by 1 July, allowing him to report for Swansea’s return to training later this month.

Strong fit for Matos’ style

Welsh enjoyed an impressive season on loan at Motherwell, making 27 Scottish Premiership appearances and earning praise for his composure in possession. His 90% pass accuracy in the league has been highlighted as a key reason Swansea view him as an ideal fit for Matos’ build‑from‑the‑back approach.

Swansea were among the Championship’s most possession‑dominant sides last season, while Motherwell ranked near the top of the Scottish Premiership for ball retention — a stylistic match that has strengthened the club’s confidence in the move.

Celtic academy graduate

A product of Celtic’s youth system, Welsh made more than 60 senior appearances for the Scottish champions and gained further experience on loan at Greenock Morton, KV Mechelen in Belgium, and Motherwell.

His spell at Fir Park was widely regarded as his most consistent run of top‑flight football, helping rebuild his profile after a stop‑start period in Glasgow.

First signing of the summer

Swansea are aiming to complete several early additions before addressing potential departures later in the window. Matos is targeting defensive reinforcements and sees Welsh as a player entering his prime with room to develop further.

If finalised, Welsh would become Swansea City’s first signing of the summer.
