Duff bemoans Swans lack of cutting edge after draw with Huddersfield

Swansea City head coach Michael Duff was frustrated his side failed to beat Huddersfield Town yesterday afternoon after drawing 1-1 in their EFL Championship encounter at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The Swans despite dominating throughout the game would struggle to break down a stubborn Terriers side who would defend resolutely.

Despite having just under 80% possession and numerous shots it would take until deep into second-half stoppage-time before a stunning 20-yard effort from Charlie Patino would finally break the visitor’s resistance.

In the lead up to the match, Northern-Irishman Duff spoke about playing with tempo on the front foot.

In a nervy opening however, it would be the visitors who would take the lead after Ben Cabango would inadvertently divert full back Jaheim Headley’s cross into his own net in the third minute of play.

Playing right into Huddersfield’s tactics the Swans would struggle to make an impact on goal as the visitors would happily sit back in two solid banks of four.

It would take the introduction of Yannick Bolasie at half-time to add invention and width to open the game up and stretch the Yorkshire side’s backline. The Congo international going close on a few occasions, whilst Harry Darling would spurn a good opportunity from a Swans set piece.

However, with defeat seemingly looking on the cards Patino would level the scores. A neat touch from the hard-working Jamie Paterson would set up the on-loan Arsenal man to place a low effort into the bottom corner to earn a late point.

The match still could have yielded all three points for the Swans had Darling’s late header hit the target.

For Duff, it would be an afternoon of frustration that his side couldn’t improve one of the worst home records in the division which has seen just two wins in ten games this season.

“We dominated the game, there is no doubt about that. I think if we play that game ten times over, we win it nine with the numbers we had in terms of possession shots and opportunities. I don’t know how we have not won it, to be honest, said Duff.

“The timings of the goals are killing us more than anything. We’ve conceded in the 47th minute against Hull which sets the trend for the second-half, the last kick of the half on Wednesday night against a really good Leeds team and we give these something from a nothing incident in the third minute.

“We have had ample opportunities to win the game. You very rarely dominate a Championship game like that, and you have to win ultimately.

“I thought all the substitutes impacted the game. Yannick [Bolasie] showed what he is but probably blew up in the last ten minutes of the second-half.

“That is where he is at though. We would have liked to have started him in this type of game because it was a game that was suited for him.

“The positives are that we kept going, the substitutes impacted the game and that we scored in the 94th minute and got something out of the game.

“Josh [Key] and Charlie [Patino] came on and of all the chances we had that was probably one of the harder ones. It was a good pinch from Pato [Jamie Paterson] and was a good finish in the end.

“We’ve not won enough games at home and they [the supporters] are just as frustrated as everyone else is. We’ve had 80% of play and had 24 shots, while Carl [Rushworth] has only made one save in the game with his feet.

“It is what it is. The emotional side is that it isn’t good enough, but you very rarely dominate a game in the Championship to that level and when you do you have to win it.

“In the cold light of day, it’s frustration we haven’t won.”
