Headteacher charged after allegedly assaulting fellow teacher with spanner at Catholic school

The headteacher of St Joseph's Roman Catholic Comprehensive school in Aberavon has been charged after reportedly attacking the deputy headteacher with a spanner after a love triangle with a female teacher was exposed.

South Wales Police have confirmed that Anthony Felton, 54 from Swansea has been charged with Section 18- attempt wounding with intent.

It comes after another 51-year-old man was allegedly assaulted at the school on Wednesday (5 March) and taken to hospital.

Police say the victim has since been discharged from hospital with minor injuries.

Felton was appointed headteacher at the 900-pupil school in March 2023 having worked at the school since 2001, initially as the Head of Mathematics according to his LinkedIn profile.

The Sun reports that married father-of-three, Felton was at the centre of a love triangle at the school and had attacked Deputy Headteacher Richard Pike with a spanner after discovering he was having an affair with the same female teacher.

According to the report, Felton emailed staff at the school prior to the attack apologising “for the distress which the rest of today will bring.”

The email sent by Felton said: “Dear staff, the greatest mistake I made was appointing ******* ******* in various roles.

“She has slept her way to the top, currently engaging in sexual activity with at least 2 current members of the SLT (School Leadership Team) including Richard Pyke.

“I’m sorry for the distress the rest of the day will bring. I am sorry.

“You are good people and do an amazing job for our community.

“Goodbye, John.”

A spokesperson from Neath Port Talbot Council said: “We are aware of an incident that occurred at St Joseph’s Catholic School and Sixth Form Centre. The incident did not involve any pupils.

“The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff are our top priority and we are working closely with the school to ensure that appropriate support is provided to everyone affected by this incident. The matter is currently under investigation by the police, and the school is fully cooperating with their inquiries.”

Local Senedd member David Rees, said: “This is a very sad situation for our community and my thoughts currently are with the person who is injured.

“I am sure the local authority will provide full support to staff and pupils who may be affected in the coming days and weeks.

“It is important that at this time the police and other relevant authorities are allowed to investigate the incident without any speculation.”
