The city council has said it has begun investigations into the hole in the ground which are usually caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer.
The sinkhole, estimated to be around 2.6m deep was located on Mount Pleasant in Gowerton, near the junction of Mount Street and Caemansel Road yesterday by concerned residents.
It is understood that the area affected is where previously in the late 1800’s an entrance to an old coal mine called Pwll Y Cwcw (Cuckoo Colliery) was located.

A statement on the Swansea Council website said:
“Our highways team has closed a short section of Mount Pleasant in Gowerton. This is a precaution, following the discovery of a small sinkhole.
“Further investigations will take place in the next couple of days ahead of repairs. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause residents in the area.”
There have been reports, however, of some disruption in the area, with school buses having to take alternative routes and some forced to make tricky u-turns.

One resident in the area commenting on Facebook was not impressed and said:
“Would have been nice if Swansea Council had informed the schools and school buses that there was a road closure.
“The poor drivers are stressed trying to navigate unsuitable routes. Seeing a coach reversing into a close to turn around clearly demonstrated they had been given no prior warning.”
