The Saints, managed by former boss Russell Martin finally have their man 12 months after seeing a series of bids from the Swans worth as much as £10 million turned down by the Welsh club.
The 22-year-old makes the move to St Mary’s having made 72 appearances for the Swans following his arrival from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022 for around the region of £400,000.
The centre-half played in both parts of the second south Wales derby double during the 2022-23 season, and scored his solitary goal for the club at West Bromwich Albion last term.
The Swans had opted to take up a 12-month extension on Wood’s contract in May, however, head coach Luke Williams had commented in May that the England under-21 international would be susceptible to move on if an offer that suited both parties came in, having shown no interest in the idea of signing a new long-term deal.
Martin speaking on finalising the deal for Wood said:
“Nathan is a player I know and trust from our time together at Swansea, and someone I also tried to sign in my first job at MK Dons.
“He’s a top defender with tremendous physical qualities, great pace and calmness on the ball.
“He’s hungry to prove himself in the Premier League, and we want to help him achieve that.”
Meanwhile, the Swans are closing in on signing South Korea international winger Eom Ji-Sung, of K-League side Gwangju after reports in Asia suggest the two clubs have now agreed on a package to take the 22-year-old to south Wales.
Swansea haven’t yet confirmed the move, but a spokesperson for Gwangju insists Eom is now on his way to the Championship, adding that the player had been on the radar for the Swans for some time.
“Professional football team Gwangju FC’s franchise star, Eom Ji-sung, has confirmed his transfer to Swansea City AFC of the English EFL Championship,” an official statement on the club’s website reads.
Eom, who has one cap for South Korea, can play across the front three positions and in his time in K League 1 has made 108 appearances for Gwangju, netting 20 goals in that time.
