Fans’ favourite and key man Franco is facing between 10 and 12 weeks on the sidelines after suffering an ankle ligament injury during a behind‑closed‑doors friendly at Fairwood last weekend.
The 25‑year‑old is believed to have been hurt in an accidental collision during the match against Exeter City, with scans confirming the extent of the damage, with the Portuguese sighted in Sancta Maria hospital in Swansea in a medical boot with crutches
The timing is a significant blow for the Swans, with the new Championship season just a month away.
Key figure since 2024 arrival
Franco has been an influential presence since joining Swansea from Moreirense in the summer of 2024, making 91 appearances and scoring six goals. His absence leaves head coach Vítor Matos without one of his most reliable midfielders during a crucial phase of pre‑season.
The setback comes at a difficult moment for Swansea’s midfield planning. Ethan Galbraith departed for Stoke City earlier this month, meaning Matos has now lost two senior midfielders in the space of a fortnight.
Swansea have also said farewell to Malick Yalcouye, who returned to Brighton after making 36 appearances during his loan spell last season.
Midfield depth tested
As things stand, Swansea’s central midfield options include Marko Stamenic, Jay Fulton, Melker Widell and Leo Walta, but the squad looks lighter in that area compared to last season, when depth was a notable strength.
Franco’s injury may accelerate Swansea’s recruitment plans, with the club already active in the market following the arrivals of centre‑back Stephen Welsh and winger Moussa Yeo.
Season starts in early August
Matos’ side begin the 2026–27 campaign with a Carabao Cup tie against Birmingham City on Saturday, 8 August, before opening their Championship season away at Stoke City the following weekend.
