Jay Fulton has seen plenty of Swansea sides in 12 years at the club. He says this one has the deepest squad of them all since the Premier League.
The Swans go into Saturday’s game with West Ham top of the Championship, and the 32-year-old is enjoying every minute.
“It’s been really enjoyable. I think you can see it from the games we’re playing, how together the team works, showing on the pitch how much fun we’re having,” he said.
“The training ground every day is a good place to come in and it helps when you’re winning, but the environment the manager’s created is a good one.”
“Almost two out in every position”
Fulton says the squad has a depth he hasn’t seen since the Swans came down from the Premier League. “It feels like a bigger squad, feels like a lot more depth and quality. I think when one player comes out, the next player comes in, and I don’t feel as if there’s been any drawback from it really,” he said.
Asked if it’s the best since relegation, he said: “I think so. If you look at it on paper, there’s almost two out in every position. The manager rotates the team quite a lot and the results have kept coming.”
“Every minute counts”: life under Vitor Matos
He credits Vitor Matos with the change. “I can only speak highly of the manager since he came in. He’s brought a new freshness to the team around the building. Everything’s been positive so far. I think everything seems to be clicking just now,” he said.
“Around the building, the manager is really brilliant for everybody. He gets everybody playing minutes.”
The message is still one game at a time. “He’s banged on about us, every game counts, every minute counts, every action counts. So yeah, it’s a good start, but it’s only the start.”
Back in form after a frustrating start last season
Fulton started the win at Millwall on Tuesday, and says he has found his form again after a difficult start to last season.
“I’ve been here a long time now and last season, the start of the season was a frustrating one for me. I’ve been feeling as if I’ve got a bit of form back to myself. And once you’ve got a team all playing in the same direction, it’s a lot easier to play,” he said.
“At any point I can come on the pitch and help the team, it’s nice. And to be able to be involved in the goals and the way we’re playing just now is fantastic.”
“We’re just looking forward to trying to test ourselves”
The Hammers arrive four points behind the Swans, after a 6-0 win at Lincoln on Wednesday.
“It’ll be a tough game. I think it’s sold out right there for the good atmosphere and one we’re all looking forward to,” Fulton said.
“I think with a team like West Ham coming to us, the form we’re in, we’re just looking forward to trying to test ourselves against them.”
Kick-off at the Swansea.com Stadium is 3pm on Saturday.
