A 73-year-old Maesteg man has been jailed for 11 years and nine months for sexual offences against children and a woman spanning three decades.

Christopher Williams was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Wednesday 21 October and given a restraining order. South Wales Police released details of the case today.

He had pleaded guilty to 15 offences against several victims.

Nine were counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14, and two of inciting a girl under 14 to commit an act of gross indecency.

He also admitted engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a girl under 13, engaging in non-penetrative sexual activity with a girl under 13, attempting to have sexual intercourse with a girl under 13, and indecently assaulting a woman over 16.

Police said the offences were committed over a 30-year period.

The force has not said where the offences took place or when the first report was made to officers.

“An unbelievable amount of strength and courage”

Detective Constable Benjamin Lewis said: “It took an unbelievable amount of strength and courage for Christopher Williams’s victims to confide in someone else about the crimes he carried out upon them, especially with so many years having passed in between.”

He added: “This was a long and complex investigation which has finally resulted in Williams being brought to justice, and the severity of his offending is reflected in the size of his sentence.”

Details of the restraining order, including who it protects and for how long, were not released.

Support if you have been affected

Anyone who has experienced sexual abuse, however long ago, can report it to South Wales Police on 101 or online. Those not ready to speak to the police can find details of support services on the force’s website.

Last month another Maesteg man was jailed for five years and three months at the same court for rape and assault by penetration.
