Former Match of the Day presenter Adrian Chiles has declared his love for Swansea’s Clyne Household Waste Recycling Centre, describing it as “a very fine one indeed” in a column published this week in The Guardian.
In a piece titled Why I absolutely love a visit to the dump, Chiles reflects on the unexpected joy of offloading unwanted possessions — and singles out the Clyne site, nestled between Swansea and Mumbles, as a standout example of what a municipal recycling centre can be.
“Even if you’ve nothing to dump, it’s worth a look,” he writes. “Swansea council should build a small viewing gallery for spectators to watch the perfection unfold.”
Chiles praises the centre’s verdant entrance, clearly labelled containers, and artfully angled parking bays, calling the experience “a symphony of efficiency.” He also notes the friendly service and good humour of fellow visitors, describing the collective act of dumping as “cleansing” and “a moment of relief and release.”
The column, which blends environmental reflection with gentle humour, has already sparked local pride — and a few tongue-in-cheek calls for Swansea Council to consider that viewing gallery.
Clyne’s recycling centre sits near Clyne Gardens and Clyne Valley Country Park, and is known for its no-appointment policy and easy access. Chiles even jokes that his cardboard might be “smunched up” alongside that of nearby residents Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas.
