BIN DAY: With August Bank Holiday fast approaching, here’s when you need to put your rubbish and recycling out

Bin day moves for most of the region next week, and which day depends entirely on which side of a council boundary you live.

The summer bank holiday falls on Monday 31 August, and three of the five councils here are running everything a day late for the rest of that week.

Swansea Council is one of the two exceptions. Its guidance says there are no changes to rubbish and recycling collections on bank holidays this year, and everything is collected on the normal day.

Christmas and New Year are a different matter in Swansea, and the council says those dates will be published later in the year once confirmed.

Carmarthenshire Council says every collection will take place one day later than usual, with Friday’s rounds landing on the Saturday.

Hygiene and nappy waste and garden waste follow the same revised schedule.

The council asks residents to put bins out by 6am on the revised day, stick to the three black bag limit, and wash and squash recycling.

Household waste recycling centres in Carmarthenshire will be open as usual on the Monday itself.

If a collection does not turn up, Carmarthenshire Council publishes service disruptions on its website after 2pm on the day, and asks people to check there before reporting a missed collection.

Cllr Edward Thomas, Carmarthenshire’s cabinet member for transport, waste and infrastructure services, said: “With the summer bank holiday approaching, I’d encourage all residents to take a few minutes to check their revised collection date.”

“Collections will take place one day later than usual, so putting your bins out on the correct day will help ensure everything runs smoothly,” he said.

He thanked residents for continuing to recycle as much as possible, remembering to wash and squash items and keep within the three black bag limit.

Neath Port Talbot Council is running the identical pattern, with every collection that week pushed back 24 hours and Friday’s rounds taking place on Saturday 5 September.

Pembrokeshire is the other council leaving things alone. Collections there run to the usual schedule through the bank holiday.

Bridgend County Borough Council is doing the same as its neighbours to the west, with collections through that week moving back a day and Friday’s rounds landing on Saturday 5 September.

Free email and text reminders are available from several of the councils, and Carmarthenshire is asking people to pass the dates on to anyone who relies on others for that sort of information.
