Blackpill Lido has closed again, the third time Swansea’s free seafront pool has been shut this season, and this time it’s the water itself.
Swansea Council announced the temporary closure on Friday, saying recent water quality testing had shown “the need for a slight improvement”.
“We anticipate the closure will be short and will reopen as soon as possible,” the council said, apologising for the inconvenience.
No reopening date has been given.
The closure lands in the middle of the school holidays, at the free pool families waited half a summer to use.
The lido at Blackpill only opened for the season on 14 July, the latest start anyone could remember, after a run of setbacks that kept it drained through the spring and two heatwaves.
Its troubles began in May, when thieves stole the pool’s replacement sprinklers days before its planned bank holiday opening, taken before they could even be installed.
The pool then managed only a brief spell in use before its specialist flooring came away, forcing it to be drained on a 30C half-term day with families turned away at the gate.
It stayed shut as June’s heatwave arrived, with the council blaming the combination of the theft and the flooring faults, before the repairs finally came good in July.
When it reopened, Cllr Andrew Williams, the council’s cabinet member for development, thanked families for their “patience and understanding” and said the authority had been “as frustrated as anyone”.
Less than four weeks on, the gates are locked again.
The council has not said what the water testing found, beyond that a “slight improvement” is needed, nor how long the work will take.
When open, the lido runs 9am to 5pm daily until the end of September, free with no booking, with a paddling pool, children’s play area, climbing rock and picnic spots, and the Junction Café next door.
For now, families heading for the seafront this weekend will find the pool empty. The council says it will reopen “as soon as possible”.
