A young carer from Haverfordwest has been honoured on the national stage for the dedication she shows looking after her family.
Meghan Smyth, an A-level student, won the Young Shining Star Award at Action for Children‘s Stephenson Awards, held at a ceremony in London.
Meghan helps care for her sister Mia, and was recognised for balancing those responsibilities at home with her education and her own life.
The award celebrates children and young people who go above and beyond in difficult circumstances.
Judges praised her positivity, kindness and determination, and the difference she has made to those around her.
She said winning had come as a surprise.
“I feel really proud and surprised to win this award,” she said. “Being a young carer can be tough sometimes, but I just try to do my best every day.”
She added that she hoped it would send a message to others in the same position.
“It means a lot to be recognised, and I hope it shows other young carers that they’re not alone and that what they do matters.”
The Stephenson Awards bring together young people, carers and supporters from across the UK to mark stories of courage and achievement.
Vikki Phillips, services coordinator for Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire at Action for Children, said Meghan embodied the spirit of the award.
“Her strength, compassion and quiet determination are an inspiration to everyone who meets her,” she said.
She said the charity was proud to support young carers across Wales, and that the award shone a light on the role they play and the resilience they show every day.
The awards are named after Action for Children’s founder, the Reverend Thomas Bowman Stephenson.
The charity supports thousands of young carers across the UK, offering practical help, emotional support and the chance to thrive despite the challenges they face.
