OSPREYS: Lewis Edwards may need foot surgery after his debut, but Koroibete is back in training

Mark Jones says the young full-back has “a nasty little injury” from the win over Black Lion, while Marika Koroibete is training again before the Dragons come to St Helen’s.

Lewis Edwards faces a spell out with a foot injuryOspreys Rugby

Young Ospreys full-back Lewis Edwards faces a spell on the sidelines with a foot injury from his debut, and may need surgery.

Edwards started at 15 in the 39-14 win over Black Lion in Tbilisi last Saturday. Head coach Mark Jones says he was hurt during the game.

“He’s got a nasty little injury there that we think probably going to need some surgical intervention, which is disappointing for Lew,” Jones said.

Lewis Edwards foot injury: surgery ‘a possibility’

Jones was careful not to call it a certainty. “I know he was speaking to experts around that and what might need to look like for him, so I don’t want to jump the gun, but I know that was something that was a possibility.”

“He’s going to be out of the game for a little while, which is disappointing because it was a lovely occasion for him and his family over in Georgia and a great opportunity.”

‘He’s been patient to wait for his opportunity’

Edwards got his chance at full-back as Jones made 14 changes for the trip to Georgia.

After the game, Jones named Edwards among the young Ospreys he said needed an opportunity at that level.

“He’s been patient to wait for his opportunity, and I thought he did well in the time he had on the field,” Jones said this week. “I know he enjoyed the preparation and the whole occasion of it, so he’ll be disappointed, but look, it’s the first opportunity for Lew, he’ll be back.”

“He’s a good lad, he’s got great training ethic, and he’s got a lot of potential as everybody’s recognised,” Jones added. “I’m sure he’ll have many more goals in the Osprey shirt, I’m sure, over the next couple of seasons.”

Marika Koroibete back in training after his rib injury

There was better news on Marika Koroibete.

The Wallaby wing’s Ospreys debut ended around the half-hour at Rodney Parade with a rib problem. This week he trained in an amber bib, which kept him out of the contact work.

“We just want to make sure we don’t set him back, but he’s improving now daily, which is great,” Jones said.

“He’s been sharp today, he’s been training against the team today, preparing for the Dragons, so good to see Marika back out there as well.”

Koroibete is not in the Ospreys side to face the Dragons on Saturday, in the first game at the rebuilt St Helen’s (7pm).

Edwards joins Kieran Hardy on the long-term injury list

Edwards joins scrum-half Kieran Hardy on the sidelines. Hardy faces months out and needs surgery on the knee he hurt in the derby at Rodney Parade.

Tom Rogers, who is in the Wales squad for the November Tests, starts at full-back against the Dragons. Cardiff visit a week later, on Saturday, 31 October (7.45pm).
