PENCLAWDD: Rake and Riddle to close again as the old Berthlwyd Inn becomes a wellness retreat

Redefining Dining Co reopened the pub as three restaurants only last year. Now it says the building will become Casa, its wellness flagship, in early 2027, with staff offered jobs at its other venues.

The Rake and Riddle is closing for a second time in two years, and the old Berthlwyd Inn is to come back as a wellness resort with a sauna, cold plunge baths, glamping and phone-free Sundays.

The Penclawdd pub only reopened in 2025 as three restaurants under one roof.

Owner Redefining Dining Co says it will now become Casa, its new wellness brand and flagship, launching in early 2027.

The company says work on the building and the grounds starts in the coming weeks, and that every member of the Rake and Riddle team has been offered a job at one of its other venues.

It is pitching Casa at the Gower coast path on the doorstep: a place, it says, “to recharge, explore and enjoy at your own pace”.

What Casa would offer

The list runs from sunrise yoga and Pilates to a private gym with personal training, a sauna and cold plunge baths, guided walks along the coast, cooking classes and sound baths.

There would be a cafe and restaurant with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, which the company says bridges “the gap between health and hospitality”, and overnight stays in glamping, camping and apartments within the grounds.

Switch Off Sundays are billed as “an invitation to put the phone aside”, and retreat packages would combine morning movement, walks and shared meals with time to read or journal.

The concept has been developed over the past year with Andrew Tyrell, described by the company as a local rambler and personal trainer with more than 30 years’ experience. The two have agreed a formal partnership, with three sites “already earmarked across South Wales”.

Redefining Dining Co said: “Whether you join us for a class, a coffee, a recovery session or a weekend away, Casa will offer the freedom to shape your own experience.”

From Colliers Arms to Casa

The building on Penclawdd Road has been through more names than most. CAMRA’s pub guide traces it to 1865, when it was a beerhouse called the Colliers Arms serving the Berthlwyd colliery, and it became the Berthlwyd Inn in 1949.

It spent years as the Sea Garden Chinese restaurant before reopening as the Rake and Riddle in 2017, named after the tools of the village’s cockle industry. Its previous owners shut it without warning in January 2025.

Redefining Dining Co bought it that spring and reopened it with the Welsh House downstairs, and Cattle & Co Smokehouse and Salvatore’s Pizzeria on the floor above, with the beer garden and play park kept.

Those brands carry on elsewhere. The company says Cattle & Co stays open in Llanelli, Swansea and Neath with more openings planned for 2027, and the Welsh House in Swansea, Cardiff, Neath and Carmarthen has new restaurants “earmarked as far north as Wrexham”.

Thanking customers for “the memories made here”, it said further details would follow in due course. It has not said when the Rake and Riddle serves its last meal, or how much the refurbishment will cost.
