The plans, by carbon recycling company Lanzatech would transform waste carbon into sustainable raw materials to be converted into aviation fuel.
The facility, which received a unanimous vote for approval by Neath Port Talbot Council’s Planning Committee, is anticipated to create over 150 full-time jobs, including 85 skilled jobs on-site.
Jim Woodger, LanzaTech UK Ltd. Managing Director, said, “We are delighted that Neath Port Talbot Council has approved our planning application. This milestone marks an important step for Project Dragon and demonstrates the potential for Port Talbot to transition to clean green industries that build on its heritage whilst providing jobs and wider benefits for the local community.”
Lanzatech say this decision followed extensive consultation with key stakeholders including members of the public.
LanzaTech adds that it plans to continue supporting the local community in Port Talbot through, in time, establishing apprenticeships along with continuing to support local charities and educational institutions, such as the newly opened JES Skills Academy.
Construction of the facility is due to commence in winter 2024, and production is scheduled to begin in 2026. However, the timetable is subject to securing the legislation, investment and offtake agreements that are needed to move forward to a final investment decision.
