Two trails run at Margam Country Park from 15 October to 1 November, with a gentler family route before 7pm and the full 15+ scare trail after dark taking in parts of the estate normally closed to the public.

An evil clown who feeds on screams and a crazed axeman with his own coven are waiting in the woods at Margam this Halloween.

Scream Time returns to the Port Talbot estate for a third year from Thursday 15 October to Sunday 1 November, billed by organisers as the most terrifying trail in Wales.

Two trails run across the estate this year, taking in new routes inside the gothic castle, through the graveyard and the woods.

Visitors will pass through courtyards and secret corners that are not normally open to the public.

Spooky Time, the gentler family trail for those aged seven and over, runs before 7pm. The full Scream Time trail, for those aged 15 and over, takes over after dark.

The cursed route begins with crazed axeman Jack and his coven in the Haunted Forest, before the Reapers check visitors in at the castle Boneyard.

Rotten Rodney, the evil clown who feeds on screams, is master of ceremonies in the Nightmare Carnival, where fire pits, food and drink, rides and games offer a chance to catch a breath.

Dr Needles tends his patients in the Hospital Asylum, vampires stalk the Crypt Corridor, and a séance room challenges visitors to work out who is real and who is not.

A live performance in the main castle hall leads into a dark maze with scares behind every door, before the trail heads into Sector 7, a biohazard zombie zone.

Mad Murdock and his chainsaw wait in the Butcher’s Backyard, a zone for adults only. Anyone finding it all too much can use a safe word and the actors will back off.

Younger visitors get their own Scarecrow Scare Village, with marshmallow toasting and games.

The trail takes between 45 and 90 minutes depending on pace and stops for food and drink, with tickets at screamtime.co.uk.

Organiser Janine Maycock said the team listens to feedback each year to make the event bigger. “We can’t wait to offer you a terrifying welcome with our biggest Scream Time yet,” she said.

Cllr Cen Phillips, Neath Port Talbot Council’s cabinet member for nature, tourism and wellbeing, said the park’s gothic castle, historic grounds and ghost stories made it “the perfect place for a spine-tingling Halloween experience”.

The event is run by the team behind the Luminate light trail with creative director Lee Rath, and organisers have again worked with an ecologist to make sure the estate’s resident bats are not disturbed.
