Swansea City opened their pre-season with a 2-2 draw against Holstein Kiel in Austria, as Adam Idah found the net but the Swans were unable to hold on for the win.
Ronald struck early to put Swansea ahead at the Kufstein Arena, before Adam Idah restored the lead after Kiel had pegged the Welsh side back.
But Vitor Matos‘ side could not see the game out, the German outfit levelling for a second time to share the spoils in the first of three friendlies on the trip.
The headline team-news line was the absence of Zan Vipotnik, who won the Championship Golden Boot last season with 23 goals but did not feature against Kiel.
The Slovenia striker is part of the squad that travelled to Austria for the camp, so his omission looks a straightforward matter of managing minutes rather than anything more.
Matos named entirely fresh line-ups for each half, with one exception: summer signing Stephen Welsh.
The Scottish defender, one of the new faces Matos is bedding in ahead of the new campaign, played 60 minutes at the Kufstein Arena.
Another absentee, Goncalo Franco, was among those missing after undergoing ankle surgery.
Franco suffered the injury in a behind-closed-doors game against Exeter City, and his recovery will be one to watch as the season approaches.
Pre-season results carry little weight, but the runout gave Matos a first look at combinations before the competitive action begins.
For a squad still taking shape over the summer, the friendly schedule in Austria is as much about fitness and fresh faces as it is the scoreline.
The Swans stay in Austria for two more fixtures on the same camp.
The three friendlies also see Swansea wear a one-off black-and-white kit fronted by Snoop Dogg’s Death Row Records, the label linked to the club’s new co-owner, with the match-worn shirts set for a charity auction.
Next up is Bundesliga second-tier side VFL Bochum on Tuesday, 21 July, with a 5pm UK kick-off.
Swansea then round off the trip against Italian side Udinese on Friday, 24 July, in a lunchtime start at midday UK time.
The camp is Matos’ main block of pre-season work before the Swans’ Championship campaign gets under way.
