Zan Vipotnik's 23rd league goal of the season earned Swansea City a 1-1 draw with Norwich City at Carrow Road.

The strike early in the second half from the league’s leading marksman looked to be enough to give Swansea all three points after the Slovenian was fouled in the box by Canaries defender Jose Cordoba.

Norwich, who needed to win the match and hope other results went their way, to stay in the top-six hunt, equalised through midfielder Kenny McLean.

The Canaries player of the season scoring a spot-kick of their own after Swans goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux was adjudged to have brought down forward Mathias Kvistgaarden as he attempted to claim a cross.

But Phillipe Clement’s side would be unable to break down a strong Swansea rearguard, meaning they would have to settle for a share of the spoils and subsequently a result that meant they could no longer improve on their ninth-place standing.

Swansea, meanwhile, drop a place to 11th but will go into their final game of the season against Charlton next weekend with an opportunity to solidify their top-half finish in the table.

Having taken three points from an excellent 2-1 away win at Loftus Road against Queens Park Rangers in midweek, Swans boss Vitor Matos made five changes with Joel Ward, Marko Stamenic, Malick Yalcouye, Jisung Eom, and Vipotnik coming back into the team.

But it would be Clement’s in-form Nowrich team that had the better of the first period and had chances to seize control of the contest. Ghanian striker Mohamed Toure wasting the best of the openings, shooting too close to Vigouroux when well placed.

Former Swan Harry Darling then nodded a corner just over before Danish midfielder Anis Ben Slimane’s shot from a narrow angle drew another save out of the Chilean in the Swansea goal.

Swansea edged in front, having improved after the break to open the scoring, and looked set for a battling away victory.

Cordoba penalised for a tug on Vipotnik as the striker raced on to Eom Ji-sung’s through ball, with the Slovenian at his composed best to slot his fourth penalty in the last five games.

As the game entered the final 20 minutes, Norwich were struggling to make an impact at the other end and it needed the game’s second penalty kick to give them a way back into the game.

Vigoroux was adjudged to have fouled Mathias Kvistgaarden at the back post as the substitute went for a cross, before McLean stepped up from 12-yards to fire home and ensured Norwich avoided defeat in their final home fixture of the season.

That gave the Canaries seven minutes plus added time to keep their season alive, but despite McLean’s header drifting inches wide late on, there was to be no dramatic winner with the points shared.
