The Green Flag is flying over Swansea University‘s campuses for a ninth consecutive year.
The university’s grounds at Singleton Park and the Bay campus are among 93 sites across Wales to secure full Green Flag Award status this year — in a record year that saw 330 parks and green spaces honoured nationwide.
The university also holds the supplementary Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Cadw, for its work preserving and promoting the history of its grounds — one of just 14 sites in Wales to have it.
That puts the university in select regional company. Bryngarw Country Park earned the accreditation this year, and two of the 14 are in Neath Port Talbot, including the Gnoll’s first-ever heritage award — meaning more than a quarter of Wales’ heritage-accredited green spaces are now in this corner of the country.
Judges who visited both campuses ruled the grounds were not only safe, well-maintained and clean, but welcoming places.
The Green Flag is the national benchmark for parks and green spaces, judged on upkeep, environmental management and community involvement — with the scheme marking its 30th year in 2026.
Open to everyone
Both campuses are open sites, with the public welcome to enjoy the green spaces alongside staff and students.
Registrar and chief operating officer Niamh Lamond said the award “means such a great deal to all of us here at Swansea University”.
“These beautiful green spaces are at the heart of what makes both our campuses so unique,” she said. “The expertise of the talented Estates and Campus Services team who manage and develop them is appreciated by colleagues, students and the wider community who are all welcome to enjoy them.”
The awards, run in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy, are recognised in more than 20 countries.
Keep Wales Tidy chief executive Owen Derbyshire said green spaces “play a vital part in supporting the health and wellbeing of communities across Wales”, thanking the staff and volunteers behind them.
This year’s 330 awards across Wales are the most in the scheme’s history, spanning flagship parks, woodlands, historic sites and community-run spaces — from crematoriums to country parks, as this week’s wins across Bridgend and beyond showed.
A vote of confidence
The award follows the Singleton Park campus being named in the top 10 Green Flag sites in the whole of the UK — earning a People’s Choice award after the public cast almost 36,000 votes for their favourite green spaces, the university says.
The campuses’ flags fly in good local company: nine parks and green spaces kept their Green Flags in Swansea this year, alongside 13 volunteer-run community spaces — with the Botanical Gardens in Singleton Park marking its centenary.
