Drivers in Swansea face a weekend of road closures and parking bans as the city gears up for the Wales Airshow this Saturday and Sunday.
The free two-day show draws huge crowds to the seafront, and the council is closing a stretch of the main road along the bay to make room for the crowds and the ground displays.
Here’s what’s closing and when.
From Friday
The first closure starts at noon on Friday 24 July and runs until 5am on Monday 27 July.
During this time, Oystermouth Road and Mumbles Road will be closed westbound only, between the West Way junction and Brynmill Lane.
There will also be no access from the eastbound side of Oystermouth Road onto Bond Street, St Helens Road, Beach Street and Gorse Lane, and a 20mph limit will apply on the eastbound carriageway.
Access to the Marina stays open throughout, via Dunvant Place.
From Saturday morning
From 8am on Saturday, the closure widens: Oystermouth Road and Mumbles Road shut in both directions, from the West Way junction all the way to Sketty Lane, until 5am Monday. Diversions will be signposted.
Argyle Street stays reachable via a short diversion past the Civic Centre, and Marina access again continues via Dunvant Place.
Two further roads close between 8am and 7pm on both days — part of Pantycelyn Road, between Dyfed Avenue and Townhill Road, and part of Nicander Parade, between Llewelyn Circle and Creidiol Road.
Separately, Guildhall Road South closes from its Francis Street junction down to Oystermouth Road, from 6am Saturday until 5am Monday. Swansea University and Brynmill Lane stay reachable via Sketty Lane.
Parking bans and tow-aways
Drivers are warned not to leave cars on the closed routes. A tow-away operation runs from 10am Friday until 5am Monday on both sides of Oystermouth Road and Mumbles Road, both sides of Bryn Road, and the westbound side of Mansel Street.
The promenade between the Civic Centre and Sketty Lane is also off-limits to cyclists from 7am Thursday until 11pm on Tuesday 28 July.
The council says emergency access will be kept open at all times, and a residents’ and business contact line will run on 01792 635428 from 10am to 6.30pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
If you’re planning to drive in, the council has six pay-to-use car parks dotted around the city for the weekend — at the Recreation Ground, the Guildhall, Civic Centre East, Paxton Street, King George V playing fields and Singleton Hospital — all bookable in advance. Two park-and-ride sites also run from junction 42 (Fabian Way) and, for Gower, junction 47.
With the roads along the bay shut, the council is pointing visitors towards public transport — and free buses will run across Swansea every weekend of the summer holidays, with services extended to 11pm on the Saturday for the airshow’s new Afterburn evening displays.
