Cullen’s 11th-minute strike from a pre-meditated set-piece would be just the tonic for new boss Williams who has had a tough start to life in the Swans managerial hot seat with just a solitary point from his first four games in charge.

The Swans came into the game in 17th place in the Championship table and would be desperate for a result on Humberside after losses to in form Southampton, league leaders Leicester City and Plymouth Argyle had left them just five points above the relegation zone.

The second half at Leicester and the performance at the Swansea.com Stadium against Plymouth however, had started to show progress but would not be fruitful in terms of points.

Today would be a different story as the Swans would once again come into the game as the underdogs against a Hull side lying in sixth place in the table after back-to-back one goal victories over Norwich City and Millwall.

It would be the Swans who would strike first crucially after going behind in their previous three games early doors. Cullen sweeping home Josh Tymon’s low corner routine to silence the home faithful.

The home side would be uncharacteristically sloppy in possession as the Swans would have the better of the chances but the Tigers would always be dangerous.

The pace of forward Jaden Philogene causing problems, whilst Turkish attacker Ozan Tufan wasted Hull’s best chance when he headed straight at Carl Rushworth when well placed.

The Swans though would be good value for their victory with both wingers Ronald and Przemyslaw Placheta on his first start for the club a constant menace on the flanks.

Cullen and Ronald would have chances to extend the lead but it wouldn’t be needed on the day as Williams’ side would defend resolutely to gain their first win away from home since the beginning of December.

The Swans now move up a place to 16th and crucially seven points away from the dreaded drop zone ahead of back-to-back testing visits in South Wales from promotion chasing Leeds United and Ipswich in the coming week.
