Police mugshot of 26‑year‑old Kai Giggie, who posed as a teenage boy to groom children before being jailed for child abduction and sexual offences.

Kai Giggie — who also uses the name Kyle Wellburn, originally from Aberdeen but living in Bridgend before his arrest — was sentenced to three years in prison at Newport Crown Court after admitting child abduction, sexual activity with a child and two further child sexual assaults.

Giggie, whose police mugshot shows him looking far younger than his true age, targeted boys by posing as a vulnerable teenager aged between 13 and 16. He told elaborate lies about being in foster care, fleeing abusive homes and being unable to attend school, all to win sympathy and trust.

South Wales Police said the offences took place between June and July 2025.

Abducted 12‑year‑old and took him to London

The court heard Giggie groomed his first victim — a 12‑year‑old boy — by pretending to be a teenager of a similar age. He bought him food, spent money on him and pressured him into travelling to London by train, claiming he had already paid for the tickets.

The boy lied to his mother about where he was, and the pair did not return to Wales until late that night. When the child’s mother became worried, Giggie tried to calm her by pretending to be railway staff on the phone.

Lies, manipulation and threats

Prosecutors said Giggie used a similar pattern with other boys, including a 13‑year‑old he told he had been raped and placed in foster care. He also threatened to harm himself to gain sympathy from the boy’s mother.

He claimed to have a fake ID that allowed him to buy vapes and told families he had been advised not to attend school.

Once he had gained their trust, he sexually assaulted them. He also assaulted two other boys — aged 13 and 14 — in separate incidents.

Giggie was arrested and answered “no comment” in interview.

‘Most manipulative individual I’ve seen’ — detective

Detective Constable Julia Page, who led the investigation, said she had never encountered someone who went to such lengths to deceive children and their families.

“In all my career in policing, I have never come across an individual so manipulative,” she said. “He took advantage of them at their most vulnerable ages and used this to dominate them for his own benefit.”

She praised the victims for their bravery and urged anyone with concerns to come forward.

Judge: ‘Sustained and sophisticated campaign of manipulation’

Recorder Andrew Hammond told Giggie he had carried out a “sustained and sophisticated campaign of manipulation” to get close to children.

“You lied about your age, background and circumstances,” he said. “You told lies to these children, their parents and grandparents about being a teenager and being in local authority care.”

Giggie, now of HMP Parc, has a previous conviction for sexually abusing a 14‑year‑old boy in Aberdeen.

Alongside the prison sentence, he was handed a 10‑year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a 10‑year restraining order, and will be subject to sex offender notification requirements.
