Not since the likes of Scott Gibbs and Colin Charvis have Swansea tasted silverware, but a new crop of heroes will now be the talk of the town as the Super Rygbi Cymru Plate heads to Wales’ second city.
Fullback Mat Protheroe scored two first-half tries to give the All Whites an early lead in the capital before an RGC fightback reduced their lead to five points at the break.
Lock Billy McQueeney went over shortly after the re-start, with extras converted by fly-half Billy McBryde, before the latter added a penalty to keep the Colwyn Bay-based outfit in the contest.
RGC narrowed the gap further to 15–13 with another McBryde penalty. However, Swansea regained control with fly-half Josh Phillips scoring a brilliant individual try from his own 22-metre line.
Phillips added three further penalties in the second half to kill off any hopes of a comeback from the visitors, and after the All Whites forced one final mistake from RGC, the whistle was blown to wild celebrations with Swansea securing the victory in front of the 2,000-strong crowd.
