Glamorgan have handed the captaincy for the 2026 Metro Bank One-Day Cup to seam bowler Andy Gorvin — and he will get the campaign under way on home soil in Neath.
The 28-year-old takes charge of the 50-over side as the Welsh county chase more silverware in a competition they have twice won in recent seasons.
Gorvin was part of both of those triumphs, lifting the trophy in his debut summer of 2021 and again in 2024.
Glamorgan open this year’s tournament against Sussex at the Gnoll on Wednesday, 22 July — one of the grounds outside Cardiff that the county still takes its cricket to.
The Winchester-born all-rounder said the squad “can’t wait to get going” ahead of the Neath opener.
Director of cricket Mark Wallace described Gorvin as “one of the most popular and respected members of the squad”.
The competition runs while many of the country’s leading players are absent on Hundred duty, and Wallace said that opened the door for others.
“With multiple players away at The Hundred the competition allows us to give opportunities to different players,” he said.
Gorvin, for his part, pointed to a mix of youth and experience in the group he will lead this month.
“We have an exciting crop of younger players coming through, and together with some more experienced heads we are looking to build on performances from the other formats this season and in the ODC over the last few years,” he said.
There is a familiar face in the coaching set-up too. David Harrison returns as Glamorgan’s coach for the 50-over competition, the same role he filled during the 2021 winning run.
The One-Day Cup has become a proving ground for county squads in recent years, giving fringe and emerging players a run of competitive 50-over cricket that they might not otherwise get.
For Glamorgan, it is also a format that has brought success when other campaigns have fallen short, and the county will look to carry momentum from earlier in the season into the white-ball competition.
Wednesday’s opener at the Gnoll gives supporters in Neath a rare chance to see the county in action away from Sophia Gardens, with Sussex the visitors to get the campaign started.
Glamorgan’s One-Day Cup run continues through the summer, with Gorvin leading a side balancing its established names against the younger players pushing for a place.
