Glamorgan head coach Richard Dawson has left the county with immediate effect to become assistant coach of the England Test team.

He has signed a three-year contract and will carry on his work with the England Lions, the club said.

Glamorgan will now start the search for a new head coach, with details to follow “in due course”.

Division One promotion under Richard Dawson

The 46-year-old former Test off-spinner was drafted in by Glamorgan at short notice in December 2024, following the dismissal of Grant Bradburn, who had admitted using discriminatory language.

Yorkshireman Dawson guided Glamorgan to promotion from Division Two of the County Championship in his first season in charge, and signed a three-year contract extension in 2025.

He worked alongside director of cricket Mark Wallace on a strategy built around developing players, and Glamorgan stayed in Division One this season.

The club says the progress has gone beyond results. Mason Crane has earned an England white-ball call-up, while Tom Norton, Harry Wallace, Jacob Blades and Tom Edwards have all been picked for England Men U19s.

Richard Dawson: “An opportunity I couldn’t pass up”

Dawson thanked “the players, coaches, staff and supporters”, and said the progress made in two years had been “incredible”.

“It’s a decision I haven’t made lightly, and an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” he said.

“Glamorgan will always hold a special place for me. The group here has so much talent and so much still to come, and I’ll be watching with great pride.”

He also thanked Wallace and chief executive Dan Cherry for “their trust and support”.

Mark Wallace: “An offer that he can’t or shouldn’t refuse”

Wallace said Glamorgan knew when Dawson arrived that they were “appointing one of the best coaches in the country”.

“With this, comes the understanding that at some point he will likely get an offer that he can’t or shouldn’t refuse,” he said.

He said Dawson “will leave a legacy which will be felt for years to come”, and is “welcome back at Sophia Gardens whenever he chooses”.

Dan Cherry: “A strong position to take the club forward”

Cherry said Dawson had been “an excellent Head Coach for Glamorgan”, working closely with Wallace to improve the club’s structures.

“We all wish Richard the very best in his new role with England and thank him for his considerable efforts, which no doubt have put us in a strong position to take the club forward,” he said.
