Swansea City have signed midfielder Stephen Eustáquio from Porto, bringing one of the stars of the summer’s World Cup to SA1 to fill the biggest gap in Vitor Matos’ squad.
The 29-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee, subject to clearance, on a contract to the summer of 2028 with the option of a further year. He will wear the number 46 shirt and is in contention for Saturday’s Championship trip to Derby County.
Eustáquio arrives fresh from a landmark tournament with Canada. He scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner against South Africa in the last 32 as the co-hosts reached the knockout stages for the first time, and wore the captain’s armband for much of the tournament with regular skipper Alphonso Davies struggling for fitness.
“It’s my pleasure to be at such a great club,” said the 61-cap international. “The last couple of days have been a little bit stressful, but the fact that the outcome was to come to such a big club like Swansea is a big motivation for me.
“I’m very happy, it’s an amazing city and I can’t wait to get started. The dream of being part of a big club looking to get back to the top league was the big attraction for me.
“Obviously, it’s going to be very hard, but at the same time, if you think game by game, it’s very possible to create a special atmosphere here in the stadium, and it might be a special season. Who knows?”
The Matos connection
The head coach’s Porto past played its part: Matos knew his new midfielder from his time at the Portuguese club, and picked up the phone.
“It was a big part of my decision to come here,” Eustáquio admitted. “I know what type of work he does, and I know how much he means to the Swansea fans as well.
“For me, it was an easy pick when he called me saying that he really wanted to give me the opportunity to play for Swansea. It was almost a no-brainer for me. I know what I’m going to get here, so I’m very happy that I made this decision.”
Matos said: “Stephen is an experienced leader who possesses great technical quality and game understanding. His qualities will complement the options we already have available to us in midfield, and he is an incredible professional.
“He is going to be an important player for us, on and off the pitch, and I am sure our fans are going to enjoy watching him play for Swansea City.”
The arrival addresses the problem that has shadowed the Swans’ summer, after Gonçalo Franco’s ankle ligament injury and Ethan Galbraith’s move to Stoke left Matos short in the middle of the pitch.
‘A warrior on the pitch’
Eustáquio spent four and a half years at Porto, making more than 150 appearances and featuring in the Champions League and Europa League, after a route through Portuguese football and a spell in Mexico with Cruz Azul.
“The pressure is very high. The demands are very high. The standard is high,” he said of life at Porto. “Basically, you have to win every game and you have to perform. The fact that I was able to play for Porto for so many years and in big competitions really made me a better player.”
Born in Canada to Portuguese parents, he moved to Portugal aged seven, represented Portugal at youth level, and committed to Canada in 2019. His self-assessment is direct: “I think that I’m a very technical player, but at the same time, if I had to make a decision, it’s to be a warrior on the pitch.”
Family runs through his football. His brother Mauro, a former player now coaching, remains his most trusted voice: “After every training session and every game, he’s always there to call me and give me his opinion. For me, it’s always good to have somebody in the family that breathes football.”
He becomes the third Swan to arrive off the back of a World Cup campaign, joining Marko Stamenic and New Zealand’s Elijah Just, and he knows what the Championship grind asks.
“There’s no days off,” he insisted. “Every day is important, every metre is important, every decision is important for the team. The Championship is a lot of games, a lot of dirty moments in the game, a lot of pitches that are very tough, but we still have to get a result.”
The first sight of him in white could come at Pride Park on Saturday.
