Drivers heading east through Swansea city centre should expect delays today after a sinkhole emerged on a key stretch of Oystermouth Road, directly outside Swansea Prison.
Swansea Council confirmed the incident on social media, noting that their Highways Team has implemented a temporary one-lane closure while urgent repairs are carried out. Engineers are currently “looking into it”—quite literally—to determine the cause and extent of the subsidence.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes, particularly during peak travel hours. No injuries or vehicle damage have been reported.
The council added:
“Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.”
Although the sinkhole appeared outside the prison’s main entrance, authorities have quickly ruled out any connection to tunnelling activity—there’s no sign of an attempted great escape.
Further updates are expected later today, and Swansea Bay News will continue to monitor the situation.
