Carmarthenshire Council are behind the plans that will see motor vehicles restricted from Olive Street and Bowen Terrace outside Ysgol Maes y Morfa between 8.30am and 9.10am and between 2.40pm and 3.20pm from Monday to Friday during term times.
Residents living within restricted streets will have an exemption.
The restrictions will be enforced by Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at each entry point of the ‘School Street’ zone, with offending motorists potentially fined.
The council say that the ‘School Street’ will improve road safety in the vicinity of the school, encourage walking and cycling to and from the school, and improve the local environment for those attending the school and for local residents.
It’s being funded by the Welsh Government as part of a road safety trial which includes mandatory 20mph speed limits in South Llanelli.
Cllr. Edward Thomas, Cabinet Member for, Cabinet Member for Transport, Waste, and Infrastructure Services said: “The new School Street will result in a safer, healthier and more pleasant environment for everyone attending the school and for local residents and will encourage more active travel to and from school”.
