Mumbles Community Council (MCC) have announced that they have signed the lease with Swansea Council that will allow them to build the long-awaited skatepark at Llwynderw.
The council say they have instructed their solicitor to sign the letter of intent with Maverick Construction Ltd, enabling them to proceed with the first stage of the skatepark build.
A judicial review into Swansea Council Cabinet’s previous decision to issue a lease for the site was upheld. This action was brought by a small group of campaigners led by businessman and owner of second-hand car dealership Trade Centre Wales, who objected to the site being built opposite his home.
Mr Bailey publicly withdrew his opposition after being involved in a heated row with a group of teenagers at the existing skatepark facility.
The council say that no papers have been received in relation to any further judicial review of Swansea Council Cabinet’s latest decision to issue a lease for the site, and solicitors are now out of time to issue papers. This means that the build can now commence.
MCC say they are waiting to hear from The National Lottery with regards to a grant application made towards funding a second stage of the build. They anticipate that this should be confirmed before the end of March.
Chair of MCC, Cllr Dr Martin O’Neill said, “This is very welcome news which means that once again, we have overcome a significant barrier that has been holding up the skateboard park. Hopefully, we can now press on with the development of this much wanted facility without further delay.”
