“Were you driving/walking along Murton Green Road at 6pm? We regret to inform you that another fire has been started in Copley Woods, and we urgently need your help.

“As a community council, we are extremely concerned about the increasing frequency and proximity of these fires—two of which have come alarmingly close to people’s homes.

“We are committed to working closely with the police and fire brigade to put an end to these dangerous incidents before the situation escalates further.

“We are deeply saddened to hear that a pony, and possibly other wildlife, tragically lost their lives in the fire that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 5th April, opposite Copley Lodge on Mayals Road, Clyne Common.

“We are currently working with the police, reviewing CCTV footage, along with the many responses we have received from residents who are checking their own CCTV systems, property security footage, and dash cams for any relevant information.

“Please contact bishopstoncommunitycouncil@outlook.com, who are now working with the police and reviewing CCTV footage that covers Copley Woods.

“Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Thank you for helping keep our community safe.”

Resident Jayne Dendle describing the scenes last night said on Facebook:

“This beautiful wild pony [pictured above] was known as Henry.

“Idiots are continually setting the common land on Gower on fire, last night Henry died in one of these fires near Copley Wood in Bishopston.

“Sheep were crying in terror, quite likely trying to locate their lost lambs. Nesting birds will have had their nests destroyed.

“If you have kids please talk to them about the horror of setting fires. It’s not big, it’s not clever, it destroys our beautiful creatures.”

Only on Wednesday had fire services warned locals to be ‘vigilant’ after a blaze which was thought to be started on purpose ended perilously close to the village.

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said:

“At 6.26pm on Wednesday, April 2, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crew from Swansea west fire station was called to an incident in Murton in Swansea.

“The crew responded to a grass fire which was extinguished using one hose reel jet. The fire is believed to have been started deliberately.”

The fire service has been asked by Swansea Bay News for more information on the latest incident.

If anyone has information please contact South Wales Police on 101 and give reference number 250010759.
