Tributes have been paid to Carmarthenshire county councillor Peter Cooper, who has died.
Cllr Cooper, a Labour member, represented the Saron ward, near Ammanford, across more than two decades of public life. He was from the village of Pen-y-banc, just outside Llandeilo, and lived in Saron, the ward he represented.
The council announced his death on Wednesday, with its leader, Cllr Linda Evans, leading the tributes.
“We were saddened to learn of the recent passing of our colleague,” she said. “On behalf of Carmarthenshire County Council, I would like to extend our thoughts and condolences to Peter’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.”
Cllr Cooper was first elected to the county council in May 2004, and held the seat until 2017, when he came third in the two-seat ward at that year’s county elections. He regained the seat for Labour in May 2022.
Cllr Evans described him as “a dedicated public servant who gave many years of service to his community”, serving “with commitment and determination”.
He was a member of the council’s Licensing Committee, had previously served on its Planning Committee, and was a former chair of its Environment Scrutiny Committee.
“He was always keen to ensure the voices of local residents were heard and represented,” Cllr Evans said.
His public service ran well beyond County Hall. He was a former chair of Llandybie Community Council and a former Justice of the Peace.
He also served as secretary and director of Cyngor ar Bopeth Rhydaman, Ammanford’s Citizens Advice.
“Through these roles, he demonstrated a lifelong commitment to supporting and serving others,” Cllr Evans said.
