Scarlets have this afternoon relieved defense coach Gareth Williams of his duties as a restructuring of the region has begun following a disastrous start to the season.

Without a win in seven games, Scarlets latest 42-7 hammering against Munster on Friday night at Parc y Scarlets would prompt change within the club and would be the final straw on a campaign that has only seen two wins from ten matches in the United Rugby Championship.

No side in the division has also conceded as many points as the West-Walians, who at an eye-watering average of 35 points a game have struggled particularly within the front-row which would be decimated against the Irish province.

Jared Payne will take over Williams’ duties as defence coach while also continuing with backs and attack duties. Head Coach Dwayne Peel will continue to lead on attack.

Both forwards coach Albert van den Berg and scrum & contact area specialist Emyr Phillips have been confirmed that they will continue with their roles.

Williams, who joined Scarlets in 2022, has been offered a new position with the region’s academy but it has not been confirmed as of yet whether he will take the role at the current time.

Prior to that, Williams had been part of former national coach Wayne Pivac’s backroom staff and that of both Wales Sevens and Wales under-20 side’s.
