A Mumbles school has staged a garden rescue – with a little help from a community grant from Tesco.
Oystermouth Primary School used the £1,500 grant to transform its sensory garden.
The money was spent on new garden equipment and plants to revamp the space with the help of parents and grandparents who volunteer at the school.
Set in the heart of Mumbles and overlooked by the historic Oystermouth Castle, the school serves an area which retains a village atmosphere – with many of the pupils’ surnames the same as those registered at the school a century ago.
Caroline Morgan, Headteacher at Oystermouth Primary School said: “A huge thank you to Tesco for the grant we received. It has enabled us to buy garden equipment and plants to transform our Sensory Garden.
“I would also like to say a huge thank you to the members of the School Gardening Club, who are all parents and grandparents who volunteer with us; Sally, Catherine, Anne, Yvonne, Andi and Kirsten, who work with the Year 6 children on Wednesday afternoons.
“They continue to water the plants on a daily basis, and the garden has never looked so amazing!”
Tesco Community Grants, the in-store scheme where customers vote with blue tokens for community projects and groups, has been helping community groups and charities across Wales and the wider UK since 2016.
Claire de Silva, Head of Community at Tesco, said: “We want to reward fantastic groups who make such a difference to young people and families in their local communities, and are pleased to be able to support the tireless work involved in projects like the sensory garden at Oystermouth Primary School.”
