Students heading back to Gower College Swansea’s Gorseinon campus next month will walk into a rebuilt site, with its £20.6 million redevelopment now complete and final finishing touches under way before the new term.
The college says the scheme has reached practical completion ahead of learners arriving for the start of the 2026/27 academic year in September.
Built by Kier and funded through the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme, the project is one of the most significant in the college’s recent history, according to the college.
Inside, the campus gains new teaching classrooms, new IT classrooms and refurbished science laboratories, arranged around an enlarged atrium at the heart of the site.
There are dedicated social and study spaces for students, alongside learner support areas the college says have been designed to be more visible, accessible and welcoming.
The new extension has been designed to run at net zero carbon in operation, using high levels of insulation, energy-efficient electric heating and a large rooftop solar array.
Completion lands on the timetable set out in April, when the new two-storey building had just been made watertight ahead of a promised summer 2026 finish. The scheme was first put to residents living near the campus in December 2022, before planning permission was sought.
“A hugely significant moment”
Kelly Fountain, the college’s chief executive, said the finished campus reflected its ambitions for learners. “This investment has created a campus that reflects our ambitions for learners, modern, inspiring and equipped for the future,” she said.
“Every aspect of the development has been designed to enhance the learner experience, improve accessibility and provide outstanding facilities that support both academic success and personal wellbeing.
“We are incredibly excited to welcome learners through the doors this September and for them to experience these exceptional new spaces for themselves.”
Teaching carried on throughout the two-year build, with the college saying it worked closely with Kier to keep disruption to a minimum.
Ian Rees, regional director for Kier Construction Western and Wales, said the firm was proud of the result. “The redevelopment has created a high-quality, sustainable learning environment that will benefit learners, staff and the wider community for many years to come,” he said.
“It has been fantastic to see the vision come to life and we look forward to seeing learners enjoy these new facilities from September.”
The Cabinet Minister for Education and Welsh Language, Anna Brychan, said the project showed the Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme at work. She said the investment was “helping to create high-quality learning environments that meet local needs now and for future generations”.
Gorseinon is one of six Gower College Swansea campuses and among its largest, serving thousands of students across Swansea and the surrounding area, with staff preparing to show off the completed site when new and returning learners arrive next month.
