A man has died following a collision involving a car and an off-road bike in Gorseinon — and another man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
South Wales Police were called to Pen Cae Crwn Road at 12.58pm on Thursday. Paramedics attended, and one man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Formal identification has not yet taken place, but the force said the family of an 18-year-old from Swansea has been informed.
A second man, aged 19, was taken to hospital with injuries.
An 18-year-old man from Morriston has been arrested on suspicion of murder, dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drugs, and driving with a controlled drug above the specified limit. He remains in police custody.
Detective Chief Inspector Danielle Thorne, of the force’s Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “I understand the concern in the local community as a result of this investigation and want to thank them for their continued patience and understanding at this time.”
“There is significant police activity in the area, and will continue to be for several hours,” she said, adding that officers were “working at pace to conduct enquiries in this complex investigation”.
Pen Cae Crwn Road remains closed between Cecil Road, from the junction with High Street, to the junction with Frampton Road. Brighton Road, Brynteg Road and Pontardulais Road are also closed.
DCI Thorne said significant resources were working to lift the closures as soon as possible, and asked residents needing urgent access to speak to an officer at the scene.
The incident shut large parts of Gorseinon from lunchtime, with the Welsh Ambulance Service sending critical care support in a Wales Air Ambulance helicopter and responding to two calls in the town within minutes of each other.
Police are appealing for witnesses who have not yet spoken to officers, and for dashcam, CCTV or doorbell footage recorded between 8am and 2.30pm on Thursday.
They are particularly keen to hear from anyone with footage from Pen Cae Crwn Road, Pontardulais Road, Brynteg Road, Cecil Road, Heol Y Mynydd, the track road between Cecil Road and Heol Y Mynydd, or Brighton Road.
Footage and information can be submitted via the force’s online portal, by calling 101 quoting reference 2600218457, or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
