GORSEINON: Roads closed for more than six hours as police deal with serious incident

Large parts of Gorseinon have been closed off for more than six hours as police deal with what they have described as a serious incident.

South Wales Police said the incident happened at Pen Cae Crwn Road at 12.58pm on Thursday. A significant police presence remained in the area into the evening.

Speculation about the nature of the incident has spread rapidly across the community and on social media through Thursday afternoon. None of it has been confirmed by the emergency services.

Pen Cae Crwn Road is closed between Cecil Road, from the junction with High Street, to the junction with Frampton Road.

Brighton Road, Brynteg Road and Pontardulais Road are also closed, with no access from any approach.

The force said the roads would be closed “for some time” and thanked the public for their patience, asking people to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible.

The closures affect several of the main routes through the town, including Pontardulais Road, one of the principal approaches from the north.

The Welsh Ambulance Service said it had been called to two incidents in Gorseinon within minutes of each other.

“We were called today at 12.59pm to an incident in Gorseinon,” a spokesperson said. The service sent a Cymru High Acuity Response Unit and an emergency ambulance to the scene.

“Advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service in a Wales Air Ambulance charity helicopter,” the spokesperson added. “One patient was conveyed by road to hospital.”

A second call came 11 minutes later, at 1.10pm. The service sent another Cymru High Acuity Response Unit, a duty operations manager and an emergency ambulance.

Police have not said what happened, whether anyone has been arrested, or the condition of anyone involved. The force’s most recent update came shortly before 4.40pm.

Pen Cae Crwn Road runs off Frampton Road in the north of Gorseinon, close to the town centre and a short distance from Penyrheol.

Officers first asked the public to avoid the area shortly after 2pm, before issuing a further update describing the incident as serious.
