A Gowerton roofer has been named the best in Wales and the Midlands.

Jacob Lovell, who runs Lovell Roofing, picked up the Roofer of the Year title at the Checkatrade Regional Awards for Midlands and Wales.

The ceremony was held at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ stadium on October 8, and Checkatrade said its regional winners were picked from more than 2,500 nominations across the UK.

Lovell now goes forward to the national final in central London on November 19, where the category winners from every regional event meet.

From a Gowerton roof to a London final

The trades directory said its awards recognise craftsmanship alongside professionalism and reliability, and tradespeople who go beyond the ordinary for their customers.

Chief executive Jambu Palaniappan said: “Great trades earn their place on Checkatrade and keep earning it. But members like Jacob Lovell go a step beyond this already high bar.”

“The Checkatrade Awards are all about celebrating the pride and effort our outstanding members put into their work, and shining a light on their achievements. We’re very proud of them all,” he added.

Up to 12 checks before a trade can list

Tradespeople have to pass up to 12 checks and sign up to the company’s standards before they can join the site, according to Checkatrade, and are monitored through customer feedback once they are listed.

The company says it has more than 50,000 vetted trade businesses on its books. The Roofer of the Year category was sponsored by M&G.

Picking a trade you can trust has been a live subject in Swansea Bay: a study published last week found building firms with overdue accounts were 4.2 times more likely to be gone or going within a year.

Lovell’s win follows another trade award for the region last month, when Ammanford builders’ merchant LBS Group was named Independent Merchant of the Year.
